| People will be able to discover how they can choose to go green when travelling at a sustainable transport exhibition as part of Travelchoice Week in Cathedral Square tomorrow (Saturday 20 September 2008) from 10 am to 4 pm.
Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice team has been holding a week of events and activities to highlight their services, as well as encouraging people to consider more sustainable modes of transport, from Tuesday 16 September to Monday 22 September. Designed to celebrate sustainable travel within Peterborough, Saturday's exhibition will include a range of displays and attractions available to visitors. There will be advice and information on sustainable travel within the Peterborough area, including cycle routes and local area travel guides; text and go bus information; community link transport; and car sharing. People will also have the opportunity to win a bike. All they will have to do is either sign up to 'good going', answer the Travelchoice survey or get their bike security marked and they will be in with a chance of winning a bike through the combination lock competition. The cycle security marking is free and Dr Bike from Motorsavers will also be offering free cycle safety checks.
Stagecoach will be on hand to promote their bus services in the Peterborough area, while Light Electric Vehicles (LEV) will be displaying their range of electric cycles. LEV are the official supplier of many of the leading brands of electric cycles in the UK and will be letting exhibition visitors have a free test-ride.
In addition, there will be road safety information about how residents can stay safe whilst driving, walking and cycling on the roads of Peterborough. There will also be a bus and rail ticket raffle where people will be asked to write their name and contact number on the back of a recent (last seven days) ticket to stand a chance of winning a two-week Megarider. Travelchoice Week 2008 will conclude on Monday (22 September) with the city council undertaking a car free day. Through an inter-office challenge, the city council will be encouraging as many staff as possible to use more sustainable modes of transport when commuting to work.
The city council's acting Travelchoice team manager Nicola Francis said: “I hope as many people as possible will join us at the sustainable transport exhibition. Travelchoice Week 2008 provides us with the ideal platform to encourage people to look at trying more sustainable modes of transport such as walking and cycling.”
